18 Wrapping Up
Settling In
- Turn in PS6
- Check Slack for announcements
- Get started on the End-of-Course Survey
End-of-Course Survey
How to access:
- Link: https://forms.gle/kn3BBavKGjdSZzw29
- Also available on Moodle: Spring 2026 Statistical Theory > Feedback > End-of-Course Survey
Notes:
- Your feedback is VERY important for guiding updates to this class (and my teaching, in general)
- Must sign in with your Mac email address, but will not be recorded
- I do not have access to survey responses until after grades are submitted
What’s next in MATH/STAT 355?
Quiz 6: Monday, May 4 (last day of class!)
- Third attempt at any topics you have not yet passed
- Encourage you to participate even if you are happy with current quiz scores – will be good practice for final!
Cumulative Final Exam: Saturday, May 9, 8–10 am
- Topics: Estimation, Properties of Estimators, Inference
- Review the learning objectives on your feedback spreadsheet (Quizzes tab) for details!
- Grading: review Syllabus
- Study Tips:
- Continue working on the collaborative study guide
- Concepts:
- Go back through notes and highlight all definitions.
- For each definition: Re-write the definition (on paper, without notes, more than once). Ask yourself: what does each word, piece of notation, etc. mean and why is it necessary? Explain the definition out loud to someone else.
- Make concepts maps to show how everything connects, both within and between topics.
- Derivations:
- Look back at example videos, in-class practice problems, problem sets, quizzes, and quiz review problems. Make a list of the types of questions that arose and the techniques we used to solve them.
- Build a “toolkit” for each type of problem.
- Re-do the problems (on paper, without notes, more than once).
- Come to Office Hours!
- Additional Resources:
- Topics: Estimation, Properties of Estimators, Inference
What’s next in Statistical Theory?
There is more to Statistical Theory than we had time to explore this semester. Other important topics include:
- Other properties of estimators
- Other asymptotic results
- Decision theory
- Empirical processes
- Non- and semi-parametric estimation and inference
- Measure theory
- …
With that said, we’ve covered a lot of the big ideas! If you take a course in Stat Theory in grad school, you’ll cover many of the same topics that we covered in this class (just faster, and in more depth).
- Example course schedule: UW Biostatistics PhD Courses & Timeline
- More examples
- From a recent alum in a (Bio)stat PhD program: “exams on theoretical topics are very much relevant… I highly recommend an exposure to statistical theory”
Thank You!
Thanks for a great semester! 😃
