1.6 Cause and Effect

Causal inference is the process of making a conclusion about direct cause and effect between a “treatment” and a “response”. It is difficult to make causal statements based on data from an observational study due to the possible presence of confounding variables.

There is a whole area of statistics dedicated to methods that attempt to overcome the potential confounding. We’ll talk more about causal inference in (Section 3.11).
